The dance-performative work is based on a story based on a dancer’s personal experience during the funeral of a friend: at the crematorium she was offered the opportunity to swallow a piece of the deceased’s bones and ashes. The central element of the performance is a stone, which symbolically embodies the form of a friend’s bone and with which the dancer has a deep, non-verbal dialogue. On stage, the dancer interacts with the stone through physical movements, gestures and symbolic acts, such as offering a glass of water. This non-verbal conversation explores the possibilities of cognitive and emotional exchange between animate and inanimate entities. Through this exploration, the performance poses a fundamental question: can we perceive and give shape to intangible emotions or thoughts? And if we recognize these invisible forms, does this open the way to developing empathy among all beings – and perhaps the possibility of communicating with those who have left the world we call real? The work also challenges traditional ideas of communication. When we, as living beings, approach inanimate entities with our habitual ways of interacting, we are in danger of projecting our own thoughts, memories, and interpretations onto them – and thereby subjugating their presence to our dominance. The performance, however, offers a different way – the way of attentive observation and active listening. The dancer relinquishes control and seeks to perceive the essence of the other, whether animate or inanimate, inviting the audience to consider the nature of connection, the passage of time and the profound silence of death. Ultimately, this work serves as an invitation to rethink our relationship to the world around us – creating space to question whether deep, empathetic listening can help us understand both the present moment and the continuities of life, death, and memory.
